OILSEED

An oilseed press hall is a floor full of point loads

The short answer A press hall looks like a wide shed with machines in it. Structurally it is a set of machine supports that happen to be indoors.

An oilseed plant — soybean, sunflower, groundnut, cottonseed, palm kernel — is a sequence of heavy machines in a line. Clean, crack, condition, press, filter, and in larger plants extract and desolventise.

The building that houses it is usually drawn as one long shed with a crane or without, and the machines are placed inside it. That drawing order is backwards for the steel, because the machines are the structure's reason to exist.

Presses are small and heavy

A screw press or expeller is a horizontal barrel with a rotating screw inside, a drive at one end and a cake discharge at the other. It is heavy for its footprint, it is bolted down at a limited number of points, and it vibrates while running.

Its supporting floor or plinth therefore takes a concentrated load plus a dynamic component, at a position that is fixed by the process layout and cannot be moved to suit a beam grid. That is the definition of a machine support, and it should be designed as one.

The line wants one span, the frame wants columns

Process lines are laid out in a straight run, and a straight run wants clear floor. A steel frame wants columns at a regular spacing. On a press hall these two pull in opposite directions, and the compromise is usually to put the columns outside the line and let the roof span across it.

That is a reasonable answer, and it means the controlling span is the width of the process aisle, not the width of the building. Getting that number from the layout — and not from a standard bay — is the first useful thing that can happen on the project.

Cookers and conditioners put heat into the frame

Before pressing, seed is conditioned with heat and moisture. The vessel is hot, it expands, and it is usually supported on a structure that is cooler than it is.

The support detail has to let the vessel grow while holding it down. A vessel welded to a rigid frame at every support puts its expansion into the frame and into its own shell; a vessel with a fixed support at one end and sliding supports elsewhere expands freely and stays a vessel.

Oil, water and meal are three different environments

Oil leaves a film on everything it touches. Water is present where steam is used and where floors are washed. Meal and cake dust settle on horizontal surfaces and hold moisture against them.

A single corrosion class across the hall is the wrong answer in both directions — over-specified in the dry end and under-specified under the press line. The zone that needs attention is the strip where oil, water and meal coincide, which is normally the floor around the presses and the pit under them.

The pit under the line is a structure of its own

Many press halls run a collecting trench or a pit along the line, for oil recovery, washdown water or a conveyor. That pit is a retaining structure sitting inside the building, and it interrupts the floor slab exactly where the heaviest machines stand.

Two things follow: the machines should be supported on their own plinths or beams rather than on the slab beside a pit, and the pit walls need to be designed for the load of whatever stands on the other side. This is the detail that most often gets resolved on site, and it is the one that is hardest to change afterwards.

What I want before drawings

An oilseed plant is bought as machines and a building. It works as one system or it does not work, and the difference is decided in the first layout meeting.
