PALM OIL

A palm oil mill runs on steam and leaves oil everywhere

The short answer Oil on its own is a nuisance. Oil plus steam plus fibre is a coating that holds moisture against steel for years.

A palm oil mill is a steam plant that happens to process fruit. Sterilisation uses steam at pressure, threshing and pressing run hot, and the whole operation produces fibre, shell and effluent alongside the oil.

The building that houses it therefore faces a combination that is unusual even among food plants: sustained humidity, oil everywhere, and abrasive fibre.

The steriliser is the wettest thing on site

Sterilising fruit uses steam, and steam escapes. The steriliser area is permanently humid, permanently warm, and condenses on every cool surface above it.

That makes the roof above the steriliser the most attacked part of the building, and it is the part nobody looks at because it is high and the ground floor is busy.

Oil holds the moisture in place

Oil on steel is not protective in this environment. It traps dust and fibre, and once that mixture is damp it stays damp against the surface far longer than water alone would.

This is why palm oil mills corrode in places that look clean: the film is invisible, the moisture is inside it, and the steel underneath is doing something nobody can see.

Fibre and shell are the fire load

Palm fibre and shell are burned as boiler fuel in most mills, which means large volumes of combustible material sit close to the process. The boiler house is a separate risk and should be a separate structure.

Where the boiler shares a wall or a frame with the mill, the mill inherits the fire load and the thermal movement. A real wall is cheaper than a shared frame, every time.

Effluent is a building problem too

Palm oil mill effluent is a large-volume, high-strength waste stream, and it has to go somewhere. Ponds, tanks and pipe routes all need space, and the ground around them is soft and often wet.

Where the mill building sits near the effluent treatment area, the foundations meet a different ground condition from the rest of the site. That is worth knowing before the frame is priced.

The structure is ordinary; the details are not

There is nothing exotic about a palm oil mill's steel: it is a portal frame or a braced frame with a crane where the maintenance requires one.

What is not ordinary is the detail set: the roof over the steriliser, the base of every column in the wet zone, the access to the high steel, and the way the building sheds water off a very large roof area in a tropical rainfall regime. Those are design decisions, and they are the ones that determine whether the mill looks the same in ten years.

What I want before drawings

A palm oil mill is judged on throughput. It survives on details that were decided before the first load of fruit arrived.
